On November 22, the Department of Transport of Khanh Hoa province issued a decision approving the plan to select contractors for the preparation phase of the project to build a tunnel through Cu Hin mountain connecting from Song Lo area, Phuoc Dong commune - Nha Trang city to Cam Hai Dong commune - Cam Lam district.
The Department of Transport assigned the Khanh Hoa Traffic Works Maintenance Management Board to be responsible for organizing the selection of contractors to carry out survey consulting packages, prepare pre-feasibility study reports for construction investment; survey supervision consulting; consulting on preparing documents for the policy of changing the purpose of forest use; consulting on preparing environmental impact assessment reports; consulting on reviewing pre-feasibility study reports for construction investment...
Previously, in July 2024, the Department of Transport reported on the proposed investment policy for projects to build a tunnel through Cu Hin mountain connecting Nha Trang city - Cam Lam district; forming an additional traffic route connecting Cam Ranh airport to Nha Trang city to avoid the route running close to the sea when passing through Cu Hin mountain, which is often subject to landslides, affecting traffic safety.
The project also aims to shorten the Nguyen Tat Thanh route running close to the sea (about 10km) to serve the development of industry, tourism, and services, creating conditions to promote socio-economic development in the province and ensure national security and defense.
Cu Hin Pass has many potential landslide risks
Khanh Hoa Department of Transport has proposed 3 route location options. Specifically, option 1 has a starting point connecting Nguyen Tat Thanh Street on the Nha Trang side. The total length of the new route is about 5,760m including a tunnel of 4,280m.
Option 2 has a length of 5,640m including a tunnel of 4,880m. Both options have an end point connecting Nguyen Tat Thanh Street on the Cam Lam side.
Option 3 is 5,980m long including a tunnel of 3,760m. The end point connecting Vinh Binh - Cu Hin Street is 1km from the planned end point of the route.

According to the Department of Transport, for option 1, the construction cost is higher because the tunnel is longer than option 3, leading to high maintenance and repair costs. Option 2 has the northern tunnel entrance near Nguyen Tat Thanh intersection; the highest construction cost is due to the longest tunnel length, so the maintenance and repair costs are high.
In particular, option 3, the road from the southern tunnel entrance requires a lot of digging and filling, affecting forest work, and is at risk of causing landslides like the current Nguyen Tat Thanh road; it is not suitable for planning and the end of the connecting route is far from the airport road.
Accordingly, the Department of Transport proposed to choose option 1 to implement the project with a total investment capital of nearly 2,600 billion VND to nearly 4,000 billion VND, depending on the scale of construction of 2 tunnels or 1 tunnel and 1 shelter.
