As 2024 comes to a close, it’s clear that some of the defining home design trends of recent years are slowly fading away, giving way to fresh styles and bold choices that celebrate comfort and individuality.

From modern minimalism to fresh neutral palettes, trends that were once considered timeless are starting to fall out of fashion.

In their wake, an exciting new mix of textures, colors, and shapes is emerging that promises to reshape the way we think about our living spaces in 2025.

Based on insights from Houzz(*), paint experts, and interior designers, Better Homes & Gardens has identified the key trends that will take off in the new year.

See what you need and don’t need to embrace the dynamic design possibilities of 2025.

1. Curves and arches replace sharp lines

“Rounded furniture shapes with gentle curves are taking design seriously,” says Mitchell Parker, senior editor at Houzz.

Curved shapes and scalloped edges were already big in 2024, dominating trade shows, but this will be taken to the next level in 2025.

Expect to see round coffee and dining tables with cylindrical legs, bulbous sofas and mirrors everywhere next year.

“This trend stems from a growing interest in natural style – combining natural/organic materials, colours and shapes in a modern way,” explains Parker.

Archives will also continue to add a playful touch to home interior design, softening rough edges and creating a welcoming, cozy feel.

2. The light green fades as the berry tones dominate

Down with the cool blues of 2024 as we move into a new year dominated by berry shades.

According to the 2025 color palette, burgundy, along with other deep purple-reds and earthy browns, will dominate both fashion and interiors.

These alluring shades create striking accents, bringing a bold, glamorous feel to any space.

“They work well on accent walls, furniture and textiles, adding a luxurious and intense feel, perfect for those looking to make a statement in their home decor,” says designer Nicole Roe of R. Nickson Interiors.

Farrow & Ball brand ambassador Patrick O’Donnell also notes that while blues may be on the back burner, they’re not dead.

Brighter, cleaner blues will still make their mark in interiors, providing a striking contrast to the deep berry tones that are dominating this year.

3. Classic English style kitchen replaces sleek, modern look

Homeowners are taking a 180-degree turn when looking for kitchen remodel inspiration, moving away from ultra-sleek, modern designs to the familiar charm of classic English country kitchens.

Flat, light kitchen cabinets are giving way to cabinets in warm wood tones and antique shades, like deep blues and greens.

“You’ll also see more natural countertop materials like natural stone and wooden chopping boards, as well as large kitchen niches, wooden ceiling beams, and more,” Parker predicts.

“Natural tones and materials that exist in nature create a warm, purposeful atmosphere,” adds Lauren Farrell, interior design director at Pacaso.

4. Pair brown with black

When combined, black and brown - two deep, solid neutrals - evoke a sense of sophistication and luxury - Photo: BHG

Known for its versatility, depth and sophistication, black remains a timeless neutral and staple in interior design. However, it can sometimes feel harsh, cold or too modern on its own.

All of these elements are taking a back seat in 2025.

The solution? Warm browns.

"Interiors in 2025 will be dominated by black and brown, rust and burgundy, creating spaces that are still close to nature with a confident edge," says Roe.

When combined, black and brown - two deep, solid neutrals - evoke a sense of sophistication and luxury.

“These dark tones add depth and solidity to the space, while balancing modern elegance with natural rusticity,” says Roe, who recommends adding rust accents to liven up the palette.

Rust, with its warm orange tones, recalls the vibrancy of autumn leaves and pairs beautifully with natural textures like wood and leather, bringing warmth and richness to the space.

5. Ditch “less is more” to get more

Design style unleashes homeowners' creativity - Photo: BHG

"Designers are hearing from homeowners asking for a more nuanced approach that includes layers of bold color, pattern, and texture," says Parker.

Whether you call it maximalism or clutter, this design approach — cluttercore — celebrates abundance and allows homeowners to fill their homes with items that reflect their personalities."

Emerging from platforms (think TikTok) as a reaction to minimalism, "cluttercore" combines maximalist principles with nostalgia and sentimentality at its core.

Unlike curated high-end decor with little emotional connection, "cluttercore" prioritizes personal items with their own stories and sentimental value.

This trend aligns with a growing desire for homes that feel cozy, inviting, and free up homeowners' creativity.

6. Dark wood and golden oak

Warmth has been a major focus for homeowners in recent years, marked by a shift from cool whites and grays to warm neutrals, earthy tones and rich wood textures.

Light golden oak, synonymous with contemporary and Scandinavian design, has dominated Instagram and Pinterest in recent years. But by 2025, wood tones are changing dramatically.

In line with the gloomy color palette predictions announced by leading paint suppliers like Benjamin Moore, wood textures are moving towards darker, richer shades to add depth and sophistication to the home.

“Combined with a palette of warm neutrals, earth tones and organic colours, we see timbers used for ceiling beams, mouldings, joinery, wall panels, columns and cabinetry to add architectural warmth to the living spaces,” says Parker.

7. Brass Makes Space for Other Warm Metals

In 2024, brass and champagne gold dominate the metal finishes admired for their warm, luxurious appeal.

Not going away in 2025, the range of these warm metals will expand.

The growing trend for rich, earthy tones has sparked a resurgence in demand for copper accents.

With its natural, vintage charm and unique patina that develops over time, copper brings a vibrant, inviting sheen to any space.

Following closely behind is nickel, which is praised for its versatility, practicality and casual elegance.

Unlike the cool, industrial feel of stainless steel, nickel has a warm tone and a soft sheen, making it ideal for modern, minimalist interiors.

Mixed metal designs are expected to be big in 2025, offering the flexibility to combine black with brass or brushed nickel with copper on everything from lighting fixtures to cabinet hardware, outlets, switches, and bathroom accessories.

This approach allows homeowners to create dynamic, personalized designs that combine modern style with timeless sophistication.

8. Change the color block for a surprising highlight

“Colour brightens up life and creates memories in the home, but there are reasons why we don’t always want to paint the whole room,” says Joa Studholme, colour curator for Farrow & Ball.

One way to avoid overwhelming colour is to create a focal point in a living space. For example, create a dramatic focal point on a door, a moulding, or frame a mirror or piece of art that seems too small for the room with a colourful border.

“Cornering is often seen as functional rather than decorative. Why not flip that idea on its head and add a splash of vibrant colour to these often overlooked features?” explains Studholme.

The same idea can be applied to arches or mouldings that bisect a space; paint them a striking colour to draw attention.

“When you want to make a bold splash of color, the door jamb may be the last place you think of, but it can’t help but make you smile,” Studholme concludes.
