According to Dr. Pham Anh Ngan, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, the food we put into our bodies has more or less an impact on the long-term "health" of the brain.
Accordingly, there are food groups that cause a decline in connections, reduce neural plasticity and have long-term effects on brain areas related to memory and motor coordination.
On the contrary, there are also foods - herbs that have been studied to show their role as antioxidants, protect nerve cells, help improve memory and regulate emotions.
Food and herbal groups support brain activity
Many studies have shown that some foods and herbs have a supporting effect on brain function as well as protecting nerve cells, such as:
Ginkgo
Ginkgo has been shown to increase brain circulation and is an antioxidant. Many studies have shown that Ginkgo Biloba plays a role in enhancing cognition and reducing neurological disorders.
Turmeric
Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Many studies have shown that the active ingredients in turmeric have a beneficial role for the brain as well as reducing the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy and mental health problems such as depression.
Ginger
Ginger plays a role in strengthening the central nervous system and anti-aging.
Schisandra
This is a familiar oriental medicine, with a sour taste, warm properties, and the effect of nourishing the mind, calming the nerves, and strengthening the kidneys... Many studies have shown the role of Schisandra in improving concentration and regulating emotions.
Toan tao nhan
Toan tao nhan is a medicinal herb used in prescriptions to treat insomnia, anxiety, and physical weakness.
Thạch Xương Bồ
Thạch Xương Bồ is often used in traditional oriental medicine to clear the mind, used in cases of phlegm-induced confusion, often seen after a stroke, or in patients with brain fog syndrome, Alzheimer's.
Viễn chí
Viễn chí is often used in prescriptions to calm the mind and is studied for its memory-improving effects.
Ba kích thiên
Ba kích thiên is often used in prescriptions to nourish the heart and kidneys, and strengthen yang. Many studies have shown its antioxidant role and its application in the treatment of memory loss.
Dâm dương hoắc
Dâm dương hoắc is often used in prescriptions to nourish the liver and kidneys, strengthen tendons and bones, and strengthen yang. Many studies have shown the role of enhancing androgen hormones of Epimedium and its effect of enhancing the flexibility of nerve cells.
Longan
Several studies have shown that combining longan extract with black cohosh extract improves neuronal signaling through NGF in mouse models of depression.

Food groups that are bad for the brain
Sugar-sweetened drinks, processed foods, and alcohol can have a bad effect on the brain. Sugar-sweetened drinks, including soft drinks and sports drinks, have been shown to increase the risk of disorders leading to type 2 diabetes and early dementia.
Refined sugar (white sugar and sugar from grains) has a high GI (Glycemic Index), which is quickly absorbed by the body and increases insulin levels in the blood. Many studies have shown that foods with a high GI are harmful to the memory of both children and adults.
In addition, instead of refined sugar, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame are found in sugar-free foods, which are associated with behavioral and cognitive disorders. Aspartame can cross the blood-brain barrier, disrupting neurotransmission, causing negative effects on emotions and thinking ability. According to recommendations, a person weighing 68 kg should only consume a maximum of about 3400 mg of aspartame per day. Depending on the brand, a packet of artificial sweetener contains about 35 mg of aspartame and a can of diet soda (340 ml) contains about 180 mg.
Processed foods such as potato chips, instant noodles, popcorn, and prepackaged meals contribute to excess visceral fat, contributing to brain tissue loss. One of the effects of processed foods on the brain is the reduction of neurotrophic factors such as BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). BDNF is found in many different locations in the brain, including the hippocampus, which is involved in learning and long-term memory.
In addition to sugar and fat in processed foods, alcohol and nicotine from cigarette smoke are also harmful to brain function.
The long-term effects of substances in food that have a negative impact on the brain have been studied, such as increasing the risk of cognitive disorders and memory loss, causing atrophy of certain brain regions and reducing the ability to transmit between brain cells. These substances also change neurotransmitter function, causing an imbalance of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, GABA in the brain. At the same time, it increases the aging process of the brain and increases the risk of neurological disorders, affecting specialized brain cells such as oligodendrocytes.
