Experts proposed adjusting the functional zoning of Nha Trang Bay, linking sustainable livelihood development, and building community tourism spots for Bich Dam Island (Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa).

At the workshop, Dr. Ho Van The - Deputy Director of the Institute of Oceanography - reported on the plan to adjust the functional zoning of Nha Trang Bay in association with sustainable livelihood development for Bich Dam Island.

According to Mr. The, the functional zoning of Nha Trang Bay must ensure compatibility with national plans related to the bay space, compatible with the planning of Khanh Hoa province and Nha Trang city.

"The functional zoning of Nha Trang Bay must harmoniously combine the interests of economic sectors and localities. The exploitation and use of resources must go hand in hand with the protection of the marine ecological environment, thereby unifying the purposes of tourism, economy, national security and defense" - Mr. The said.

Developing community tourism in Bich Dam island

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Phan Dinh Phung - Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Tourism - said that Bich Dam Island is a sheltered area with beautiful landscapes, clean environment, good security, and many conditions for developing community tourism.

Regarding the advantages for tourism development, Mr. Phung pointed out that Bich Dam Island has a large sandy beach area for overnight camping, and has the ability to restore the craft of crafting souvenir products from shells, snails, etc. The island also has tourist attractions such as Bich Dam communal house, Bich Son pagoda and Hon Lon lighthouse - one of the five oldest lighthouses in Vietnam.

"The thoughts and aspirations of the people here are that the local government should pay attention to building and investing in developing a community eco-tourism model to attract visitors to Bich Dam, thereby creating jobs and increasing income for the people," said Mr. Phung.

However, the island area currently has no access to the national grid to provide electricity to households, and the transportation infrastructure on the island to tourist attractions is still difficult. Bich Dam Communal House needs investment and renovation because it has seriously degraded.

Faced with the above situation, departments, branches and sectors of Khanh Hoa province have made proposals to promote the development of community tourism models on Bich Dam Island.

These include accessing the grid to provide electricity to households, investing in transportation infrastructure on the island to tourist attractions, organizing forces to support tourists, mobilizing resources to support initial capital for households, exploiting culinary values and traditional industries of the locality.

Mr. Nguyen Van Minh - Vice Chairman of Nha Trang City People's Committee - said that after recording opinions from relevant units, the city will complete the first project to develop green and sustainable community tourism on Bich Dam Island.

"We will aim for a green and sustainable community tourism model, where local people are the main subjects, directly benefiting from tourism activities, while protecting and promoting the natural and cultural values of the island" - Mr. Minh shared.
